先日購入した、Shuttle X27D にLinux を入れる話。
手持ちのWindows XP ライセンスが空いていないので、Linux を入れることにした。

調べによると、Windows XP Pro ではソフトウェアmirror が組めないことが判明した。
ミラーを組めない環境では心許ないので、Linux ソフトウェアミラーで使ってみる。

デスクトップ環境の構築はそこそこ、サーバにする予定もあるので、
Linux ディストリビューションはCentOS 5.2 を選択。
リリース日が若干古いので、最新のデバイスに対応しているか不安ではあったが、
何とかなるだろうと割り切って作業開始。

インストーラはPXE で起動する。
手元のWindows マシンにTFTPD32 を入れて、DHCP&TFTP サーバにする。
また、CentOS-5.2-netinstall.iso を入手し、syslinux 関係を取り出す。

インストール開始、と思いきや、インストール元メディアの選択でHTTP を選んでも、
DHCP からIP アドレスやらを取得出来ず先に進めない。

原因はNIC のドライバ。
Shuttle X27D はRealtek RTL8111C を積んでるみたい。
新しいチップで、CentOS に収録されているドライバが対応していないのではと疑念を抱き、
自前でビルドしたドライバに入れ替えることにした。

initrd 作り直し。これには別にLinux 環境が必要。
まずはr8168.ko を作る。
r8168-8.009.00.tar.bz2 こんな感じのファイルをrealtek.com.tw から入手。
一般ユーザーで適当に解いてmake すると、いきなり/lib/modules 以下に書きに行くので、 permission denied で終了。
できあがったsrc/r8168.ko は/var/tmp あたりに置いておく。

CentOS-5.2-netinstall.iso をloopback mount して、initrd.img を取り出す。
initrd.img はcpio されたファイルをgzip してあるやつなので、適当に解く。

先ほど作ったr8168.ko を解いたディレクトリの中に放り込む。
入れ終わったらcpio & gzip し直す。
